City History

The town of Parkville was formally platted in 1844 by Colonel George S. Park, who was an entrepreneur and veteran of the Texas War of Independence. Parkville was originally a steamboat landing along the Missouri River banks. By 1880, with a population of 482, Parkville had its real starting point with a general store, grocery, shoe store, hardware, and even two hotels.

Colonel Park realized a life-long dream of a college in his name beginning Park College in 1875. Achieving university status in 2000, Park University now serves around 17,000 students!

The community is recognized as a suburban area of Kansas City with an exceptional quality of life for its residents.
